The gross total is approximately 40 ATP. If the glucose is from the blood, there is an investment of 2 ATP at the beginning of glycolysis, making the net gain 38 ATP. If the glucose comes from glycogen, there is only an investment of 1 ATP, making the net gain 39 ATP.
