When the athlete contacts the ground, the musculotendinous units are stretched, generating elastic energy. When the concentric action (the jump) is conducted immediately afterwards, the elastic energy is released, contributing to total force production. Too long of a delay causes the stored energy to dissipate and be lost as heat.
