The more arousal experienced by an athlete, the narrower their field of focus becomes. Arousal increases and athletes begin to block out non-relevant stimuli, allowing them to better focus on task-relevant cues. However, if arousal is too high, the field of focus narrows more and task-relevant cues begin to be blocked out as well, decreasing performance.
