It might be too much to ask a strength coach to memorize the various percentile values of different strength, power, agility, and endurance tests for a range of athletes, but it does help to have a general idea of scores in case the certification exam includes it in a question. You need to know what is reasonable and what is unreasonable from the choices provided. The question is asking for the load that is at the 90-percentile rank. This means that 90% of all male NCAA Division I football players have a 1RM squat less than this load, and 10% of all NCAA Division I football players have a 1RM squat greater than this load. If you look at the answer choices provided, you should quickly see that 3 of the 4 choices don’t seem reasonable. I don’t think that 10% of D1 football players have a 1RM squat of over 900 pounds. Similarly, it doesn’t seem reasonable that 90% of all football players have a 1RM squat less than 300 pounds or 200 pounds.
