Tuscaloosa, Ala. — With Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator for Alabama, making the move to head football coach at the University of Georgia, rumors started to circulate that Alabama’s strength and conditioning coach, Scott Cochran, would be making the move with him. Under his current contract at Alabama, Cochran is one of the highest paid strength and conditioning coaches in the United States, making $420,000 per year (see list of highest paid strength and conditioning coaches in the U.S.).

At least at this point in time, the rumors turned out to be false. Alabama announced Monday night (12/14/15) that Scott Cochran would be remaining at Alabama to continue his role as strength and conditioning coach.

According to Alabama’s head football coach Nick Saban, “I’m very happy that Scott Cochran will continue to lead our strength and conditioning program. He’s an important part of our program and does an outstanding job. The players really respond to him, and his role has been a big part of what we have been able to accomplish in terms of our success here both on and off the field.”

We can only imagine what kind of salary Kirby Smart had to offer Scott Cochran in an attempt to lure him away from Alabama. With any luck, salaries for strength and conditioning professionals will continue to move higher to reflect their importance in high-level athletics.
